Mercury biomagnification in a Southern Ocean food web

چکیده

Biomagnification of mercury (Hg) in the Scotia Sea food web Southern Ocean was examined using stable isotope ratios nitrogen (?15N) and carbon (?13C) as proxies for trophic level feeding habitat, respectively. Total Hg isotopes were measured samples particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, squid, myctophid fish, notothenioid fish seabird tissues collected two years (austral summers 2007/08 2016/17). Overall, there extensive overlap ?13C values across taxonomic groups suggesting similarities habitats, with exception seabirds, which showed some differences, possibly due to type tissue analysed (feathers instead muscle). ?15N increasing enrichment order POM zooplankton squid seabirds. There significant differences among species within groups, reflecting inter-specific variation diet. concentrations increased level, lowest (0.0005 ± 0.0002 ?g g?1 dw) highest seabirds (3.88 2.41 chicks brown skuas Stercorarius antarcticus). tended be lower 2016/17 than mid-trophic (squid fish), but opposite found top predators (i.e. seabirds), had higher levels samples. This may reflect an interannual shift marine web, caused by reduced availability a key prey species, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba. In 2016/17, would have been forced feed on trophic-level prey, such myctophids, that burdens. These results suggest changes are likely affect pathway predators.

Mercury biomagnification in the food web of Lake Tanganyika (Tanzania, East Africa).

Lake Tanganyika is a globally important lake with high endemic biodiversity. Millions of people in the lake basin depend on several fish species for consumption. Due to the importance of fish consumption as an exposure route of mercury to humans, we sampled Lake Tanganyika in 2000 to assess total mercury concentrations and biomagnification of total mercury through the food web. Stable nitrogen ...

Mercury Biomagnification between Two Trophic Levels of a Grazing Food Chain (Plankton and Planktivorous Fish) in a Fresh Water Ecosystem

Background: The Present study was carried out to track and calculate Biomagnification Factor (BMF) of total mercury (T-Hg) between two different trophic levels (i.e., plankton and a planktivorous fish) in a fresh water grazing food chain. Methods: Experimental organisms were planktonic biomass and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) as a planktivorous fish. Silver carp samples were obt...

Mercury speciation and biomagnification in the food web of Caddo Lake, Texas and Louisiana, USA, a subtropical freshwater ecosystem.

We studied the biomagnification of total mercury and methylmercury in a subtropical freshwater lake, Caddo Lake, Texas and Louisiana, USA. The present study is unique in that it not only included invertebrates (seven species) and fish (six species) but also an amphibian (one species), reptiles (three species), and mammals (three species). Nonfish vertebrates such as those included in the presen...

Food web-specific biomagnification of persistent organic pollutants.

Substances that accumulate to hazardous levels in living organisms pose environmental and human-health risks, which governments seek to reduce or eliminate. Regulatory authorities identify bioaccumulative substances as hydrophobic, fat-soluble chemicals having high octanol-water partition coefficients (K(OW))(>/=100,000). Here we show that poorly metabolizable, moderately hydrophobic substances...

The biomagnification of polychlorinated biphenyls, toxaphene, and DDT compounds in a Lake Michigan offshore food web.

The biomagnification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), toxaphene, and the DDT family of metabolites was investigated in the epibenthic Mysis relicta (mysid), the benthic Pontoporeia hoyi (amphipod), plankton, particulate flux, surficial sediments, and Myoxocephalus thompsoni (deepwater sculpin) in southeastern Lake Michigan. DDE was the most strongly biomagnified compound, increasing 28.7 tim...
